AI Powered Product Owner

Participated in an AI Empowered Product Ownership workshop focused on exploring how Product Owners can use AI to improve requirements engineering, backlog refinement, user-story creation, and product discovery

The workshop provided hands-on experience with AI-supported Product Owner practices, including transforming business ideas into structured requirements, creating user stories and acceptance criteria, mapping customer journeys, refining backlogs, and exploring AI agents that can support Product Owner activities.

Key Activities:

  1. AI-Assisted Requirements Engineering: Explored how AI can help Product Owners transform unstructured business ideas and challenges into clearer requirements by asking clarification questions, identifying missing information, and structuring the resulting requirements.

  2. User Story & Acceptance Criteria Creation: Practiced converting business needs into structured epics, features, user stories, acceptance criteria, deliverables, and test cases to support better communication between business and development teams.

  3. User Story Mapping & Customer Value: Worked with customer-focused techniques to understand user journeys, identify customer needs, and connect product features with the value they are intended to deliver.

  4. Backlog Refinement: Explored approaches for improving backlog quality by identifying ambiguity, missing information, dependencies, edge cases, and other areas requiring clarification before development.

  5. AI Agent Exploration: Learned how Product Owners can experiment with AI-powered agents to support repetitive activities such as requirement clarification, story generation, and backlog preparation while keeping the Product Owner responsible for the final decisions.

  6. DISCO Capacity Allocation: Explored the DISCO framework for understanding how team capacity is distributed across DevOps/technical debt, Innovation, Support, Customer/committed features, and Other/overhead activities.

Workshop Impact:

  1. Developed a practical understanding of how AI can augment Product Owner activities and reduce time spent on repetitive requirements and documentation tasks.

  2. Gained hands-on experience applying AI-supported techniques to improve the clarity and completeness of product requirements.

  3. Learned how structured prompts and AI-assisted workflows can help Product Owners identify gaps, ask better questions, and prepare higher-quality backlog items.

  4. Strengthened understanding of the Product Owner's role in maintaining business context, prioritization, stakeholder alignment, and final accountability while using AI as an enabling tool.

Tools & Methods Explored:

  1. AI/LLM-based Product Owner assistants and reusable prompting techniques.

  2. User Story Mapping and customer-focused product discovery.

  3. Epics, features, user stories, acceptance criteria, and test cases.

  4. Definition of Ready and Definition of Done.

  5. Miro and Azure DevOps-based product and backlog workflows.

  6. DISCO framework for capacity allocation and work categorization.

Summary:

Participating in this workshop provided practical exposure to AI-enabled Product Ownership, demonstrating how AI can support Product Owners in translating business intent into clearer requirements, improving backlog quality, and streamlining refinement activities.

The workshop strengthened my understanding of how AI, product discovery, user-story mapping, backlog refinement, and capacity management can be combined to help Product Owners focus more on product value, stakeholder alignment, prioritization, and informed decision-making.
